New Entrants with Added Value – Westerton Farmers: Farm to Table
Fiona Smith is the 4th generation farmer at Westerton Farmers, farming alongside her father and a close-knit team. The family bought the first farm in 1920 and have grown the business ever since. The farm is all arable; growing spring barley for malting, wheat for distilling, seed and ware potatoes, and a wide range of vegetables.
Farm to Table is a new business venture which opened in April 2021 following the success of their other farm retail outlet, the Spud Hut; an honesty-box based hut on the farm. Farm to Table provides a fantastic modern retail space showcasing a wide range of fresh farm produce. Along with fulfilling increased consumer demand for fresh produce, Farm to Table aims to reduce packaging, reduce food miles and environmental impact, educate consumers of food and farming, and the benefits of supporting local businesses. In future, the business aims to provide events such as markets and expanding their ‘pick your own’ offer.
Fiona also has a strong passion for renewable energy to reduce emissions and has invested in solar panel technology and ground-source heat pumps on the farm.
