Borders Small Farms Workshop – Event Summary

The Borders Small Farms Discussion Group recently met to discuss soil and grassland management and flock health topics in the run up to lambing.

Key points from this meeting were:

  1. Knowing your farm soils and structure is valuable when deciding how to manage your small farm
  2. Small scale woodland planting can provide shelter as well as aesthetic value
  3. There are funding options available for small scale woodland planting
  4. Hedgerows provide shelter, food for wildlife and if managed well, can provide a livestock barrier
  5. Reseeding grass pasture can boost productivity
  6. Plan ahead for reseeding and start with a soil sample
  7. Managing new re-seeds early is key to a lifetime of productivity
