Resilience of the Hill Flock – event summary
7 February 2017Hill sheep farmers attended an open meeting in a local hotel in Tomintoul. An enthusiastic group who engaged in questions, sharing concerns and raising awareness of own experiences.
The meeting was split into a morning and afternoon session, split with lunch in between.
The morning session included presentations on the following:
- Nutrition of the hill ewe
- Ailments of the hill flock (inc. practical demo of liver/ heart inspection for parasites)
- Sheep record keeping/ tagging – cross compliance
The afternoon session included presentations on the following:
- Biodiversity on the hill
- Wintering options
- Flock monitoring – getting to know your figures
This was good technical meeting, with excellent comments from farmers in the feedback provided – a few of the presentations can be found below.

- Technical Note (TN669): Ovine Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma (OPA)
- Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA also known as Jaagsieke) is a contagious viral disease that leads to lung cancer of sheep. It is caused by Jaagsieke sheep retrovirus (JSRV). It is a significant production limiting disease in many countries of the world including the UK. All breeds are susceptible to OPA and no single breed has been shown to be more susceptible than another.
